"OF MICE AND MEN" ENDING?

At the end of the book "Of Mice and Men", after George shoots Lennie, he and Slim walk off and Carlson and Candy- one of them says something like "What do suppose is eating them?"...I didn't understand that part. Does anyone know what it meant?
