Im really scared of the awkwardness :(?

so i really like this guy, and im pretty sure he likes me too, but i have the tiniest feeling that if i told him i liked him, that he would shoot me down, and we would have that awkard friendship where one friend knows the other one likes them and its super weird. i wanna know how to avoid that? any suggestions?
